I’ve had Netflix for four years, and lately I have not been getting any use out of my $10 a month account. My last DVD has been sitting in my room since February. It’s bad.
I first got Netflix the summer before I started college/film school, and plowed my way through the list they gave us of film that were “must sees” before starting our cinema education. I got through that list pretty quickly, but after three years of listening to professors, talking with fellow students, time spent surfing the web, waiting in line four hours before a midnight screening of a geeky blockbuster, and frequenting local art houses (IFC Center, I’m looking at you), I’ve accumulated a queue that is now at about 800 films. It’s pretty scary, daunting, and thrilling - first off, I cannot believe that for such a new art (compared to others, cinema is just a baby) there is so much product; secondly, when will I ever finish this list when so many films come out each year that I somehow miss in theaters; and third, my mild OCD is compelling me to get this list completely cleared (I have a similar list of television shows that’s almost done, just about eight to ten series left to go… yeah, I said almost done. Don’t ask how many were originally on it.).
So basically what I’m going to be doing here is writing up any thoughts I have about the films I watch (only the Netflix ones, nothing in theaters or films not on my queue). Quint of Ain’t It Cool News (a man I absolutely adore and filmicly relate to) did something similar on the site when he watched a movie a day and posted his reviews. I won’t give myself any sort of deadline, although I do hope to finish within five years as I’m constantly adding to my list, and I won’t stick to any traditional reviews. As this is a tumblr and not a typical blog, any random thoughts, images, or sounds will be posted along with some words on the film.
I hope whoever reads this enjoys, and maybe it’ll lead to Harry Knowles hiring me to be a stable east-coast female contributer to AICN, since there aren’t any that comprise all of the above qualities!
ENJOY THE SHOW!
